Our day began with a stop at the Iditarod Headquarters to observe the final vet checks for the big day, and it was bustling with excitement. A couple of film crews were there, as was Jeff Schultz, the official photographer of the Iditarod. I was able to bring this experience live to my students back home in Indiana. How exciting for several of them to see the musher that they've chosen to follow up close and personal. A couple of these generous mushers even made personalized video messages for my kiddos. I was thanked by the mushers many, many times over for teaching the Iditarod to my students. It was both interesting and educational to watch the veterinarians carefully examine each and every dog to ensure that only the healthiest canines participate in the Last Great Race! My biggest takeaway of the day was hearing Martin Buser say, "Dogs don't have a yesterday, and dogs don't have a tomorrow. They live in the moment." I'm trying to get better at that, and this adventure is a timely reminder.
